Connected to a changing landscape, Mills’ studio is perched on the rugged Atlantic coast of North Devon. To the west of the studio is a special biosphere nature reserve, homed to rare flora and fauna. A stones throw to the north stand some of the finest examples of temperate rainforest with clean rivers cascading through untouched ancient woodlands. The intimate setting of the studio is an extension of this landscape, with rare monoliths of English grown wood surrounding the space in which the work is created.
Mills has a particular sensitivity towards the process of creation for each piece, and those he entrusts in assisting him. Every piece is made by Mills himself with the help of his sole studio assistant, Jack. Mills’ wife, Emma, helps orchestrate the sharing of the work around the world and assists in cutting timber and final finishing of new works.
The intimate setting and approach to the making of each piece is crucial for Mills to translate his designs from thought and feeling into tangible pieces.
