English Walnut Vessels

2020

Signed and dated

This English walnut vessel come from the same tree that stood in English countryside for over two centuries. The tree fell in high winds and I was fortunate to secure a limited amount of the tree. English Walnut has become increasingly rare in recent time due to being prized for its character and warmth by cabinetmakers and gun makers for centuries. The deep warm tones are unique to English Walnut and the each vessel displays the wonderful grain patterns and growth rings from this magnificent tree. The center of the tree is clearly visible and two natural crack run from the rim to the center point on each side of the vessel. Signed and dated on the underside.

Charred Rainforest oak

2019

Signed and dated

This oak vessel come from an old oak tree that stood in temperate rainforest woodland in North Devon, UK. The woodland is only a short walk form my studio and its a place that Iā€™m forging a special relationship with. This Oak tree stood low on the side of a steep valley and grew here slowly for many hundreds of years. A large portion of its trunk still lays on the ground as it continues its life cycle in the woodland. It fell into a water meadow during a harsh storm. The vessels have been turned whilst high in moisture then slowly charred.

Devon Lime Vessel

2020

Dimensions 22 H x 27 Ƙ

Signed and dated

These charred lime vessel comes from a tree that stood 650ft above sea level a short walk from my studio here in North Devon. Strong Atlantic winds prevail on these hills and an unseasonal spring storm blew this old Lime tree over. Mills turned this piece whislt is was still very high in moisture and as a result its settled into beautiful organic sculptural form as it dried. The outside has been charred and gently sanded resulting in an almost topographical surface with undulating grain lines. The inside reflects the bright tones of the natural Lime wood.

Finished with a traditional natural soap finish.

These nesting bowls form a single piece and are made from the same English Oak tree that stood in the West Sussex countryside for over two centuries. Colours and tones ebb and flow through mellow golden browns and warm oak hues into deeper browns and earthy notes. A subtle ripple in the grain catches the light in the bottom of the bowls and medullary rays are plentiful. The shimmering ripples give the oak itā€™s name of Rippled Oak and is commonly caused by compression points within the treeā€™s structure as limbs mature and begin to sink with weight.

Gilded Oak Vessel

2020

Dimensions 24cm H x 20cm Ƙ

Signed and dated

This vessel has been made in collaboration with a local artist and friend, Danni Bradford.

The vessel is made from old Sussex Oak and 24kt Italian gold. The tree was felled at the order of the owner due to their dislike of the leaves on the lawn during the winter months. Mills charred the vessel to the point of cracking, an intentional act. Once charred Danni Bradford spent time gilding the cracks with 24kt gold leaf. Layers of gold leaf were slowly applied to the filled cracks resulting in a beautifully textured gold surface.

Ancient Oak Bowl

2020

Dimensions 6.5 H x 23cm Ƙ

Signed and dated

This large bowl is made from a magnificent ancient oak that stood for over 650 years. At this age oaks are truly ancient, they have done all of their growing and are now receding and becoming points of history in the British landscape. The bowl features an array of character as a result of its age and a mellow honey colour. Natural cracks, old knots and holes speak of the age of the tree, and deep ripples within the grain patterns show points of compression, most likely due to the sheer physical size of the tree in its prime years. The bowl has a flowing rim and sits on a foot to elevate the bowl.

Rusted Vessel

2019

Dimensions 26 W x 20 H

Signed and dated

This Rusted Vessel has been made from Sussex Oak tree that fell in high winds. The midnight blue / black patina has been caused by a natural process of oxidization that has taken place of the course of approximately one century.

Around one hundred years ago somebody hit some wrought iron nails into an oak tree in the Sussex countryside, perhaps pining a sign to the tree or securing a fence. Over the course of the next century the nails became embedded deep within the oak tree as it grew over them and they started to rust. This process of oxidization within the tree reacts with the naturally occurring acids in oak and begins to chemically turn the wood from warm brown tones into deep midnight blues and blacks. As the seasons ebb and flow so do the sap levels within the tree, which in turn pulls and pushed the staining deeper into the oak.

Mills acquired a piece of this oak which was condemned to fired wood and began by extracting the metal inside, evident by faint blue staining on the surface of the wood. He didnā€™t know if or indeed what he would find. Using and blunting a chainsaw, gouges and chisels he slowly extracted four wrought iron nails that had caused the patina. Mills had the age of the nails verified by a blacksmith at around the turn of the 19th century due to the material and the hand forged marks evident on the surface.

After extracting the metal Mills began slowly turning a collection of vessels on a traditional woodworking lathe.

This Rusted Vessel features heavy grain patterns, warm oak tones and deep blues and blacks. The work also features a number of natural cracks that opened in the wood prior to in being mounted on the lathe. There is also a large feature knot on the underside of the vessel. The natural distortion that takes place as the piece is dried has created an organic form with a flowing rim.

English Walnut Vessel

2019

Signed and dated

This vessel is made from old English Walnut. The piece comes from a tree that fell in high winds after standing in the West Sussex countryside for over 150 years. English Walnut is a very rare wood having been a prized material of Cabinet Makers and Gun Makers for centuries. This piece features complex and heavy grain patterns, knotty features and deep walnut tones. The center of the tree can be seen on either side of the vessel evident by a series of cracks that meet in the middle surrounded by growth rings. The wood was still v high in moisture when it was mounted on the lathe, and was turned slowly and delicately to achieve a very thin wall thickness. As the piece dried over an extended period of time it warped and distorted into this final organic form.

Rusted Oak Vessels

2019

Signed and dated

This collection of rusted vessels is made from an ancient Sussex Oak tree. The black staining that ebbs and flows throughout the collection is caused by old wrought iron nails that were submerged in the oak. Mills extracted the nails with chisels and gouges and discovered them to be in the region of 100 years old, evident by the wrought iron material and their hand forged marks. The nails would have hammered into the side of the oak tree around one hundred years ago and were then submerged as the tree grew over the course of a century. As the nails rusted the this natural patina formed as a result of a process of oxidisation. The metal reacts with the natural tannins in the oak and the wood slowly changes into this midnight blue / black colour.
