Objects For Living
This exhibition brings together a group of objects inspired by Mills’ visit to the studio of Kawai Kanjaro whilst visiting Kyoto in 2023.
The works explore beauty in the everyday, usefulness, spontaneity, and natural harmony in forms and surfaces that feel grown rather than designed, at once ancient and contemporary. The works invite contemplation through their balance of utility, sculpture, and material presence.
As in the forests from which these trees grow and the meditative craftsmanship of Kanjiro’s home, these pieces are quiet yet deeply alive.

This one-off cabinet is made from solid English burr Oak which has been selected for its unique and perfect burr edges. The front edges feature full burr character that merge seamlessly into each other. The charred surfaces have been brushed to open the grain creating a very tactile surface. The back edges of the piece have been softly shaped to contrast the texture of the front whilst continuing the organic nature of the piece as a whole.

These pieces are a continuation of my exploration into the realms of box and cabinet making. My aim is to balance the geometry and function of traditional cabinetry whilst maintaining and creating pieces that have a natural and organic presence synonymous with my practice. The grain runs continuously up the sides and over the top of the cabinets as these are cut from a single piece of wood in sequence. The front features a sculpted edge whilst the back edge is straight to sit against a wall. The doors are constructed in a traditional frame and panel method and feature book matched pippy oak panels. A solid burr oak pull features in the middle of the doors. To create a warm colour contrast the carcass of the cabinets have been fumed / smoked into a deeper brown colour. This isn’t a stain but a chemical reaction achieved by utilising the natural tannins in the wood. Inside the cabinets is a single shelf that has adjustable height positions. The back of the cabinet is a floating panel construction which works in harmony with the traditional structural elements of the piece to allow seasonal movement.

English Brown Oak Low Table
Dimensions 150cm L x 60-80cm W x 35cm H
£3,400
This low table is inspired by the Tatami room in the home of Kawai Kanjiro, Kyoto. Upon my visit I noted the low generous table in the middle of the room accompanied by a mixture of seating. For me this piece reflects this space and time and may offer as a beautiful piece within a similar context.
The top features a beautiful coloured patina flowing in and out of natural and brown oak tones. Being a stable quarter-sawn cut, the book-matched slabs feature striking medullary rays. The butterfly keys have been made using 5000 year old bog oak. This wood is our most dense UK hardwood, similar in strength and density to Rosewood. The natural black colouring of the wood is due to the wood having been submerged in the soil for over 5000 years where the tannins naturally react with the irons present in the subsoil.
The tabletop is connected to the base with traditional oak buttons, and the tabletop is braced with breathing braces which feature elongated holes to allow for any movements. This construction method pairs with the exceptionally strong bog oak wood butterflies and quarter-sawn slabs will mitigate effectively against movement issues.

English Burr Oak Wall Display
Dimensions 85cm W x 70cm H x 22cm D
£1,750
This one-off wall piece is pieced together with beautiful english burr oak. The edges feature beautiful burr character. The charred and brushed surfaces allow notes of golden oak colours to come through the black surfaces.
This wall piece is the second piece I have made of this nature but these burr oak wall pieces will be very limited due to the unique qualities required in the wood.
Attached to the wall with 4 screws.

Dimensions 48cm x 38cm x 73cm H

This table features an amazing burr oak top. The burr edge nearly runs the entire way around the piece with only a small portion of smoothed edge. This is the only piece I have made like this, a true one-off. The high undercarriage makes this a perfect plinth for ceramics for example. The surfaces of the piece have been charred with the legs and stretchers brushed allowing subtle oak tones to come through in the grain.

Zaisu Chair, 2026
English Walnut
This is my first exploration into traditional Zaisu seating. This particular piece features a walnut seat and steam-bent crest. The spindles are hand turned from english oak and the sliding dovetail legs have also been carved from english oak. The sliding dovetail anchors the leg into the seat while allowing for wood movment. It will be noted that the dovetail at the front of the seat is tight and fixed into position. The dovetail joint is a slightly looser in fit at the back to allow for wood movement.
